Albany: It's time to get big money out of politics, and enact public financing for elections. Pass clean elections now.
New York's current campaign finance laws are weak and ineffective. We have contribution limits, but they're the highest in the nation. Those high limits make it easy for corporate lobbyists to influence policy in Albany -- just one veiled threat about an offended donor could be enough to change the vote of a vulnerable legislator. And without action, it'll only get worse.
Cuomo’s plan is one of the very first in the country to deal with the aftermath of Citizens United. And it’ll make New York a national leader in the campaign for fair elections.
By encouraging politicians to seek small donations, public financing limits the influence of lobbyists and mega-contributors and makes elected officials more responsive to the demands of their constituents.
