Use of the filibuster has skyrocketed in recent years, as Republicans have done everything possible to block popular progressive bills -- even ones with majority support -- from becoming law.
The only way we can hope to pass the DREAM Act, the Employee Free Choice Act, a real jobs bill, or a gun control bill is to make it harder for a handful of Senators to shut down debate.
Anyone who has seen Mr. Smith Goes to Washington knows the filibuster has its place. Meaningful reform can make the filibuster a legitimate tool, not a stumbling block to progress. But we’ve got stand up and fight for that reform. And we need Senator Schumer to lead this battle.
