So for three years, more than a million New Yorkers have had to hope they don't get sick because they can't take a paid day off when they or a family member gets sick and they can't afford to take an unpaid day. For many, simply missing a day of work to recover from the flu can put their job at risk.
Finally, after three years of procedural delays, the bill has real momentum. Last week, Speaker Quinn allowed the City Council to hold a hearing on the issue, and said that “it’s not a question if we need paid sick leave; it’s a question of when and how that will happen.”
